History is fascinating especially when you have the opportunity to hold a piece of it in your hand. Have you ever gone to one of your favorite museums and were completely captivated by the antique items that sat behind glass in a display? One thing we enjoy most is personally inspecting high quality antiques that we sell on consignment. One of our first instances included a 25 piece lot of EAPG Centennial goblets that you see to the right. They were purchased in Philadelphia and stayed in the same family all these years.
Philadelphia, 1876, host to The Centennial International Exhibition and the World’s Fair. A very special event in itself but more importantly to Americans. It marked the 100th year since the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the celebrations where on display for the world to see.
I can imagine the excitement in the air and the crowds forming around Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. City Tavern would have been busy, the Inns with no vacancy, and Fairmount Park welcoming it’s guests to it’s brand new grounds. Happiness, joy, optimism, and thankfulness were sure to be seen on every face.
When I imagine this day, I see the shops owners and vendors. The spirit of entrepreneurship at work and the celebrated document validated. Vendors promoting and selling their goods to the passing crowd… fans, EAPG goblets, programs, medallions and booklets.
We are grateful for for the same privileges.
