Prince William chose to give his betrothed Kate Middleton the same 18 carat blue sapphire and diamond ring his father, the Prince of Wales, gave his mother in February of 1981. William says it’s his way of having his mother be a part of the wedding day.

As a symbol of loyalty, constancy, love and honesty, the sapphire has long been a part of the crown jewels of Britain. According to legend sapphire is the sacred stone of the sun god Apollo. The stone possesses light & dark blue reflecting “the kingdom of heaven Sacred Stone”. In ancient times, sapphire was used to decorate places of worship, and as a ritual tribute by many Middle Eastern cultures. Specifically, the Persians think that the earth is supported by a huge sapphire, and the sapphire’s blue color reflects to the sky giving us blue eyes.

Pearl Gold Sapphire BracletThe sapphire is the birthstone for the month of September. In 1870, Tiffany and Co. published a pamphlet containing verses that related to gemstones associated with birth month. September’s poem reads:

A maiden born when autumn leaves
are rustling in September’s breeze,
a sapphire on her brow should bind;
to bring her joy and peace of mind.

      I really like how sapphires present themselves against platinum and white gold. One of our consignment clients told us that their relatives were to wear the book-link platinum bracelet to evening events as yellow gold was to be worn as day jewelry.
